Great Salkeld
Great Salkeld is a delightful picture postcard village with its red sandstone cottages clustered around St Cuthbert's Church and the village Playing Field.
The village inn the Highland Drove enjoys a reputation locally for real ale and quality food (booking for evening meals is essential to avoid disappointment).
Lazonby which is 2 miles away has a well-stocked village Co-op/general store which sells a wide range of groceries, haberdashery and fresh bread from the local bakery. The village also has an open-air swimming pool which is very popular in the summer.
Petrol is available locally at Lazonby or Langwathby (3.5 miles) during normal working hours and Penrith (24 hours)
Rail links.
Settle to Carlisle railway -- stations at Lazonby and Langwathby. Intercity mainline Euston to Glasgow -- stations at Penrith and Carlisle
Distances: Penrith 5 miles, Ullswater 10 miles, Carlisle 17 miles.

Our favourite autumn holiday. Lovely and cosy again. Recommend Village Bakery at Melmerby, Cranston's at Penrith, Millyard at Morland and Abrahams in George Fisher's at Keswick. All lovely food. Enjoyed 2 good walks Dalemain to Dacre and Castlerigg (which was apparently was 4 miles but felt like 8!!) nice and muddy but beautiful scenery. K, D & S R. Tyne & Wear (Ref: Mickledale October 2011)
